Five 90's Fashion Trends That Are Making A Comeback

By Kristen Peuvion on July 6, 2014

It’s hard to believe that the 90’s were over 20 years ago. Almost all of us collegiates were born in the early 90’s and we were able to not only witness all of the trends that came about during this time, but as we got older, we wore some of this decade’s most popular ones as well. And like almost every trend in the fashion world, the 90’s are back!

Here are five 90′s trends you need to try now.

Grunge

People were all about the grunge look in the 1990′s. This look was inspired by heavy metal and hardcore punk music artists that were popular during this time. Stars like Kurt Cobain wore things like flannel and acid wash jeans which are coming back in style once again.

But this type of flannel isn’t your typical fitted, western style flannel, but rather it has a looser fit and is usually a darker color like maroon, forest green or navy blue. For an updated look, wear it open over a tank top or graphic t-shirt with your favorite pair of high-waisted cut-off jean shorts. To make it truly 90’s, top off the outfit with a pair of Converse and you’ve got the perfect casual look for class.

Overalls

Another iconic trend of the 90’s that is slowly but surely making its way back into our closets is overalls. Many of us probably think of this look as childish because we spent our days watching Michelle Tanner on Full House wear them time after time, but the overalls of today are no longer just made for people below the age of nine.

Fashionistas like Kourtney Kardashian have been sporting this trend for a while now and looks so stylish doing so. Don’t be afraid about looking like you’re on your way to a hoe-down, this trend has become more chic than it was in the past because many of today’s overalls are more fitted than the shapeless, boxiness of the ones in the 90’s.

They also come in tons of different colors and lengths, so you’ll be able to find a pair you like no matter what your style is.

Logos

Logos are making a comeback as well. While grunge started with the heavy metal and punk music genre, it’s safe to say that the logo trend was made popular by the 90’s hip hop and rap scenes. Designer after designer during New York Fashion Week 2014 had their models walking down the runways with their brand name splashed across just about any type of clothing imaginable, like these DKNY looks.

You might not want to look like a walking advertisement for your favorite brand or designer, so an easy way to incorporate this look into your wardrobe is a simple t-shirt with the logo across it.

Velvet

Velvet just screams 90’s. While it’s the summer now and velvet is a bit too heavy of a material for the warmer temperatures, the cooler months are the perfect time to rock this look. This material was most commonly seen in the form of dresses back in the day, but now this trend has taken things up a notch.

Since it is such a hot material, designers are using velvet in nearly any type of clothing or accessory you can imagine. Try it in jumpsuits, skirts and shoes for a trendy way to wear velvet, or try a classic velvet dress to keep your look truly 90’s.

Minimalism

The 90’s were all about keeping things simple in terms of fashion. Minimalism was a popular trend in which the clothes had very simple silhouettes in one color. The minimalism trend for 2014 is essentially the same thing! Models strutted down the runway in simple long, floor length dresses or skirts.

While some people might find the shapeless silhouettes to be unflattering, this look is super chic so it is worth a try. A way to try this without the shapeless dresses is to go for a loose, flowy long jacket and tailored pants like at the Sally LaPointe fashion show. The tailored pants will give you some shape, while the coat stays true to the trend. Keep your makeup and hair simple as well to get the true 90’s minimalistic look.

So all of you 90’s children out there, get excited! The 90’s are definitely here to stay. The modern twist on the trends of our childhood will have you reliving your days of youth, but in a chic and fashionable way. The clothes you wore when you were little are now anything but childish. The 90’s trends are now chic and stylish, and definitely a must-have in any college student’s wardrobe!
