How To Stay Chic In Cold Winter Weather

By Kristen Peuvion on November 20, 2014

It may only be November, but in many places throughout the country, freezing temperatures have already struck. That means that college campuses all over the country have felt the cold too and there is nothing worse than trekking all the way across campus in what feels like the tundra.

And after the incredibly cold winter we had last year, most of you are probably cursing these premature cold temperatures even more so than years past. Cold temperatures on a college campus means bundling up in just about everything your closet has. Chunky sweaters, thick pants, hats, gloves, scarves, boots, a winter coat; any clothing item, you name it, and you probably have it on when you’re walking across campus.

All of this clothing and material can inevitably leave you feeling a bit bulky and the opposite of fashion forward. And no one wants to walk around campus looking or feeling like the abominable snowman.

So what should you do if you want to stay warm and still look and feel stylish? Try these easy tips to take your winter look from chunky and ugly to chic and fabulous!

Belt your coat

Perhaps the biggest contributor to the bulk in your winter look is your winter jacket. After all, it is the best and warmest defender you have against the cold.

An easy way to diminish all of the puff that usually comes with a winter coat is to try belting it. This will instantly add some much needed shape to your silhouette and compact your winter coat as well.

Stay away from black

When it comes to winter coats, black is usually the norm. If you want to take your winter look to a chic new level, though, try buying one in a fun pop of color. Pastels and bright red or blue are hot this season.

Top your look off with a coat in one of these fab colors and no one will even notice if you look a little bulkier than usual. The pop of color makes a statement as well as flatters your body!

Smart layering is key

When it comes to layering, there’s good layering and there’s bad layering. Good layering makes you look slim and adds depth and detail to your outfit. Bad layering is simply throwing on whatever you have in your closet, one on top of the other. It’s not flattering and doesn’t do much for your ensemble.

In the winter, good, smart layering is super important. It will keep you from looking like a puffy marshmallow.

An easy, warm and flattering way to layer is a long-sleeve t-shirt under a flannel or button down shirt with one of your favorite winter sweaters on.

Top it off with your winter coat and you’ve got a stylish, sleek and most importantly, warm, look!

Another layering idea to try, for those of you who like an edgier look, is to add some leather as one of your layers. This might sound unconventional, but try wearing your leather jacket under your winter jacket.

Two jackets will definitely have you warm enough and the leather peeking through the ends of your winter jacket will make a bold statement.

Make either of these ensembles a staple in your winter wardrobe and you won’t be disappointed or cold!

Add something glamorous

Faux fur can make any outfit luxurious and glamorous. It also happens to be incredibly warm! Trade in your normal winter coat for a faux fur coat if you’re looking to take your look up a notch.

It’s also a great idea to wear for a night out because it’s so chic. No one wants to be wearing a drab winter coat when they’re out for a night with their friends. A faux fur jacket will feel more like a fabulous accessory, rather than a winter coat.

Wool is a necessity

When it comes to your winter accessories, like hats, gloves, scarves, you name it, you want them to be made out of a warm material. Wool is the way to go for all of your winter accessory needs.

Wool is not only super warm, but also thick and cozy, not itchy like some other warm fabrics.

Wool is also a good way to go when it comes to socks and tights. Obviously girls still want to wear skirts and dresses in the winter sometimes, and wool socks and tights make that possible.

Try a pair of tights with your new holiday dress and heels for your family Christmas party, or if you’re wanting a look that’s more casual, try a pair of over-the-knee wool socks with your riding boots and fall mini skirt. Either way you’ll be able to rock your dress or skirt and still feel warm thanks to your wool accessories!

So put away those chunky, dowdy winter clothes and don’t fear the cold too much this winter.

Walking across campus in the freezing cold will never be fun, but with these tips, the winter will at least be bearable and you’ll look stylish and chic all season long.
