Super Bowl Sunday Has Activities For All

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us once again. As a day of many things, it’s important to remember why this day is, well, super.

It is a day filled with people spending well-deserved money to sit in nosebleed seats, and cheering on a team based off of a last minute decision of which quarterback is cuter, better, or just more awesome.

It is a day filled with people spending hundreds of dollars on beer, chips and queso and Buffalo Wild Wings take-out menus. It is a day where friends and families gather around a TV to judge and analyze 30 second or one minute commercials paid for in the billions by giant corporations.

It is a day where fans eagerly watch to see who will screw up worse, the entertainer singing the national anthem, or the one(s) performing at half time.

But most importantly, it is a day where almost the entirety of the United States pauses in their busy lives to celebrate and idolize the best of the best in the National Football League and to watch grown men thank their families, coaches and God for this amazing opportunity and victory.

As a so-so, on-and-off NFL fan, I’ve always wondered why the college football National Championship has not yet out shadowed this historic date in American history. They are, after all, older than this professional game and without the young players, stars would never be showcased and drafted to the NFL.

However, once I took a closer look, I realized the raw emotions, and perseverance of amateur athletes looking for their big break have a lot to learn from the reigning kings of football.

While National Championships may implicate campus wide riots and parties at the winning school and many college students all over will pick a team to cheer for during this game, too, the Super Bowl is basically a national holiday.

This year, it is plausible to say Michigan students and alum will be cheering for the Patriots to support Tom Brady while Wisconsin fans will be supporting Seattle’s quarterback Russell Wilson.

The following of players from the collegiate level to the big stage is part of what keeps NFL fans dedicated and what makes it easy for teams to garner fans from schools and states all over the United States.

Usually on a Monday night, the time of the National Championship takes away from its viewership, too. If you are not an avid sports watcher, it is extremely easy to bypass the game.

Super Bowl Sunday, however, has a date that once again increases its status as a holiday and makes it very difficult for people to forget about the importance of what is taking place since it is on a day where many people do not have to work.

Since it has become a major social gathering event, oftentimes it is hard for students, even those uninterested in sports, to evade spending the afternoon with their friends, whether or not they even watch the game. Depending on your school, this can be a relaxing time day drinking with friends and a nice break from one’s usual Sunday routine of completing the forgotten homework.

For those who may be dedicated, perhaps extremist college football fans who really want nothing to do with professional athletes, or the polar opposite, people who want nothing to do with all events that require physical activity, there are activities for all on Super Bowl Sunday.

If you are a college football fan, just sit back and watch the pros do their thing playing a game they love at all levels. Order some wings and invite all your friends over to make wages over the outcome of the game. This is an easy way to earn over $100 if all players throw in $10.

Speaking of wagers, my friend participates in prop bets, which are perfect for both football and non-football fans. With prop bets, contestants answer a mix of questions from everything about how long the national anthem will take to be sung to the color of Katy Perry’s hair at halftime to the final score of the game and the MVP.

You don’t have to know the stats of every player in the NFL to throw out a guess of what the final score will be or if Idina Menzel will take more or less than two minutes to sing the Star-Spangled Banner.

For many nonathletic oriented people, the Super Bowl can be like watching the Oscars or Grammy’s for the rest of the world. Just as they are only fun to watch the insane reactions of the winners and the performances, the Super Bowl is fun to some to only watch the big plays, and the preshow and halftime performances.

A great thing about 21st century technology is that we can pause, fast forward and rewind live events. This means countless replays for the hard-core fans booing over the pass interference call and countless fast-forwards for the guests more interested in Katy Perry’s outfit than if the ball that ended up on the ground was an incomplete or a fumble.

So if you like to skip the long speeches highlighting the hard work of actors and entertainers during those award shows, you can do the same thing with football by fast-forwarding past all the hard work of the players to get to the controversial calls and the confetti show at the end of the game.

No matter what team you affiliate yourself with, what college you attend, or what activities you prefer to watch, Super Bowl Sunday can and should be a good time for all. I’d highly encourage everyone to go and hang out with some friends on Sunday.

At the very least, you can get a free meal out of it by making your friends buy all the food. Who knows, you may actually learn a fact or two about football and impress all your friends who knew you were actually just there for the food.

Having said all of this, go Patriots!
