This is an 8 week summer student internship position. Student must be currently enrolled in an accredited University.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Emergency Management is seeking a self-motivated individual for an all hazards research and data collection project. Successful candidate will collect, analyze, and record information on a predetermined list of hazards which the Medical Center faces as potential risk. In addition, applicant should possess the ability to verbally articulate their findings to key stakeholders of the Medical Center such that stakeholders can extrapolate information necessary to understand the vulnerability of and the risk to the Medical Center and its Ambulatory Care clinics. Applicant must have an understanding of Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA) tools such as the Threat Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA) possesses, as well the Kaiser-Permanente HVA. Understanding and how to apply the all hazards approach established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is a critical component of this project. Furthermore, successful candidate will be computer literate, and possess an in-depth understanding of Microsoft Office tools. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and capable of working independently.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in emergency management or related field or currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program. 2 years experience in emergency services (volunteer fire department, rescue squad, etc.).

REPORTS TO: Manager, Emergency Management and Response

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: North Carolina Driver's License


1. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.

2. Assists with development, monitoring and evaluation of healthcare emergency management programs.

3. Conducts independent research to identify risks and vulnerabilities facing the medical center and balance that information against plans, preparations, and training in order to develop an objective Hazard Vulnerability Assessment.

4. Conducts projects for the Emergency Management Committee and other safety-related committees and assures accomplishment of the committees goals and objectives. Provides input and serves as a technical resource for all committee activities and to committee members.

5. May be expected to respond to/assist with any type of disaster or emergency situation that might occur on Medical Center property. These include, but are not limited to: Chemical Spills/Leaks, Fire, Bomb Threats, Mass Casualty Disasters, WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) NBC (Nuclear Biological and Chemical) incidents and threats, and Violent Threats (Active Shooters, etc).
