By Elana Goodwin on June 20, 2015

With Father’s Day happening Sunday, June 21, it may be a little on the late side for you to just be worrying about what to get dear old dad now … but better late than never!

Here are some last-minute Father’s Day gift ideas that won’t break the bank.

1. Buy him some college “Dad” swag. Besides regular college apparel, most university bookstores also sell college gear that say your university’s name on it and mom, dad, or alumni, too. Depending on your budget, you can either buy dad a university sweatshirt or a tee that says “dad” on it, wrap it up, and give it to him as a Father’s Day gift.

If he’s not the type to really wear college apparel, consider getting him a pair of sweatpants to wear to sleep or buy him a college bag or hat.

2. Make him a personalized mug. While you may not be able to give this to him in time for Father’s Day, this sort of present is one that’s special even if it’s late. Go through your pictures and find some of your favorites of just you and Dad.

Next, go to a site that allows you to make personalized picture mugs, like CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart, and upload your pics. You can choose a border and a title, and rearrange your pics until you’re happy with your mug’s look before ordering it. This is an especially great gift if Dad’s a coffee drinker but even if he isn’t, he can still use the mug to hold pens in his office or something.

3. Give him something personal. Do you have inside jokes with your dad? Are there songs or movies or books that the two of you don’t agree about or both love? Consider buying Dad his favorite book and writing a nice inscription in the cover or look into purchasing that vinyl record he always talks about listening to when he was a kid.

Figure out that something that’s personal to just the two of you and symbolizes some aspect of your relationship and give that to your Dad. It not only shows that you listen to him and remember what’s important to him, but it also shows you really thought about your gift and wanted to get him something he’ll really appreciate.

4. Frame a cute picture. This is a super easy last minute Father’s Day present to give your Dad and it also won’t look like you totally forgot about Father’s Day and didn’t have anything planned. Pick out a great picture of you and your Dad or of your whole family and send it to a picture developing place to get blown up.

Unless you want him to put the framed pic on his desk, go with a picture size that’s bigger than a 4×6 so he can hang it on a wall and the gift seems more substantial. With lots of places offering 1-hour photos, you can get this done quickly and with little hassle, and while you wait for the photograph to be developed, you can pick up a nice frame that fits your picture.

5. Get him a gag gift. Is Dad the one who’s always in the kitchen at your house? Do you and/or your siblings tease Dad about his golfing game, slippers, love of Star Trek, etc.? Well, take whatever jokes with or about your Dad you have and turn them into a Father’s Day gift.

Get him a funny apron, like one that looks like Superman or has a lady’s body on it. Buy him a pair of funny slippers or a “Keep Calm and Eat Bacon” tee. Give him something that symbolizes the lighthearted and goofy side of your relationship (with an optional deeper, more meaningful and practical gift to come after).

6. Set up a date for just the two of you. During the school year, even when you’re home for a visit you probably don’t have enough time to spend some quality hours with just your dad. So for Father’s Day, figure out something that would be fun for the two of you to do together and set up a day or date for just the two of you this summer.

Your day or date could consist of biking, fishing, hiking, camping, bowling, golfing, going to a movie, catching a baseball game together, or something else the two of you would enjoy. Make the necessary arrangements, like booking a reservation, marking a day on the calendar, buying tickets, etc. and then give the gift of time together to your Dad.

So don’t worry if you haven’t gotten your Dad a Father’s Day present yet — you’ve still got time to give him one of these great last-minute gifts he’s sure to love.
