Fun Ways to Stay Cool in the Summer Heat

By Jessi Stickel on August 14, 2015

In the summer heat we will do just about anything to keep cool, including soaking ourselves with the hose.

The summer heat can be brutal; when it’s unbearably hot you can feel exhausted and drained from just sitting outside. Let’s face it, it’s summer so no one wants to sit inside every day to avoid the heat.

Here are some fun activities and cold treats to help you enjoy every humid summer day.

Outdoor Water Activities

1. Water balloon fight

The classic water balloon fight is possibly the best activity to stay cool in the summer. The balloons are cheap, water is free, and almost any age can enjoy the fun of darting globs of water hitting your friends.

You can also make up different little games using water balloons. For example, you and a friend can see how many times you can toss a water balloon back and forth before it breaks.

2. Slip-n-slide

If you’re in need of an adrenaline rush on a hot summer day but can’t go to a water park, make your own water slide. A giant tarp or a store bought slip-n-slide with water and soap poured on it can be everlasting fun. To make things even more fun you can use tubes or blow-up pool floats to slide down on.

3. Sports in the pool

If you don’t have a pool, go to a friend’s or a public pool and bring your favorite sports with you. You can purchase a floating volleyball net or basketball net especially made for the pool. This way the pool won’t get boring after 20 minutes and many people can participate in the game.

4. Epic water gun fight

Get a bunch of friends and classmates together and have an ultimate water gun fight. Water gun fights are fun, but even more amusing with a lot of people. I couldn’t think of a better back-to-school get-together than this one.

5. Night swimming

If you want to cool down on a summer night by night swimming try putting a bunch of glow sticks in the pool, giving it a cool and fun look.

 6. Movie day

For when it is just way too hot out there, stay inside and have a movie day with friends. Each friend can pick out a movie and bring snacks to munch on during the films. If that gets too boring you can play different games indoors as well. Games like Twister, charades, card games, and board games can keep you and friends occupied for the whole day while being somewhat active.

Fun Summer Drinks & Treats

1. Homemade Slurpees

Instead of running to 7-11 for a Slurpee on a hot day, make your own at home. You would be surprised how delicious a homemade Slurpee is just using ingredients you already have in your kitchen. You can create your own masterpiece using Kool-Aid powder, club soda, sugar and ice or even using your favorite soda with ice. A blender will be needed to crush the ice and mix the drinks.

2. Homemade popsicle creations

Popsicles are so easy and fun to make in the summertime. Try making them in the morning so they will be frozen and ready to eat by the afternoon. You really can make a popsicle out of any type of edible liquid. You can try using lemon lime soda and add sweet candy like gummy bears, or you can use something simple like lemonade.

Besides the popsicle ingredient(s) of your choice the only other item you will need is an ice pop maker (Walmart) and a freezer, of course. You can also try making ice cream pops with candy or healthy frozen yogurt pops with fruit. These sweet treats will definitely keep you cool after a day in the heat.

3. Banana split bites

If you are craving a more filling and healthier snack than popsicles then look no further — banana split bites are your snack. They are easy and quick to prepare and will certainly cool you off on a hot day. The ingredients you will need include bananas, strawberries, pineapple, dipping chocolate, and chopped nuts for topping. For full instructions go here.

 4. Fruit ice cubes

Drinking a lot of water is essential for staying hydrated on a hot day. Water can get boring sometimes, so a great way to enhance your water is through your ice. Put fresh fruit of your choice in the water of your ice tray then place it in the freezer.

Once the ice is frozen you’ll have fruit cubes to infuse your water with fruit flavors as the ice melts while also making your drink colder. This is a great way to put a creative twist on your drink, and may make you want to drink more water. You can also try this with lemonade or sodas like Sprite, for an extra kick of flavor.

Health tips for a hot summer day

*Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
*Wear sunscreen; even if it is cloudy out you can still get burnt by the sun.
*Don’t wear yourself out; if you are feeling tired take a break in a shaded area or air conditioned room.
