The Bright Side of Going Back to School

By Jessi Stickel on September 5, 2015

Yes, another school year means that summer break is over, which in many ways sucks. However, not everything about going back to school is negative.

There is a bright side to hitting the books again …

1. Another year = closer to graduating.

It may feel like “Ugh, another year of classes, papers and exams,” but if you really think about it the more classes you take, the closer you are to earning your degree and of course, GRADUATING!

Sometimes when we are caught up in all the homework and papers we forget why we are doing this and working so hard. We are working our butts off to get our desired degree and get a career that we are passionate about.

2. New clothes!

It’s almost fall and the new school year is starting. You know what that means … “Shopping!” (“White Chicks” voice.)

Getting new clothes and shoes for the school year is basically a must. I can’t think of a better way to bring in a new year than with new accessories. New clothes always make you feel confident about yourself, which is the number one thing you need when you’re going to different classes, not really knowing anyone. Why not look your best?!

3. Meeting new people in class and around campus.

Even if you already have a great set of friends, it never hurts to make new ones. Every semester you have different classes with different people, which is always interesting. It’s pretty easy to make friends in class since you already have something in common (the class/professor/school, duh).

You never know who will be in your class, which is sort of refreshing in a sense. Everyone could use another friend or at least a study buddy in college.

4. No longer being bored.

Sometimes the summer can be a bit boring; Netflix and pool days can only be satisfying for so long. It’s nice to have a set schedule every day. During a semester, it’s typically easier to be more productive which makes you feel good about yourself, like you really accomplished something that has worth.

Having a daily schedule can also give you a lot of motivation. You might finally feel like hitting the gym four times a week like you promised yourself you would do over the summer.

5. Getting to see your friends almost every day.

When you are in college and used to being around your friends and roommates constantly, then go home for the summer it can be an unpleasant change. When school is in session, you get to see friends in class, at your dorm or apartment, and when you go out. It’s really like having a never-ending sleepover. Over the summer it is normal to miss your friends from school and it is nice hanging out with them all the time when you go back.

If you are an incoming freshman or a transfer student, there is a good possibility that you won’t know many people on campus. However, this isn’t a bad thing; meeting new people is a part of life and a big part of going to college. Some of the friends you make in college stay in your life forever.

6. Joining teams and clubs.

If you are joining a college team or club for the first time or re-joining, sports and activities can be exciting and a great stress reliever in college. It is a great way to meet new friends and feel like you belong. Sports and clubs may also serve as a way to blow off steam, or just keep you sane during midterms and finals.

7. Being on your own again.

Parents are great and all, but once you go off to college and do things your own way it’s hard settling in back at home for the summer. Over the summer you have to listen to your parents again and maybe even have a curfew. Cleaning your room becomes a weekly task instead of monthly at school. However, when the school year starts you get to live how you prefer, even if it means eating extremely unhealthy and being a total slob.

8. Becoming more intelligent.

This may sound cliche, but we are all going to school to learn what we do not already know, right? Most college students have a career goal and are taking many difficult classes, bettering their skills in order to be successful in thier chosen career field.

Becoming more intelligent in the career field you are passionate about normally gives off a positive and confident feeling about your future, which is why you’re in college in the first place.
