Fight the Fear

By Carelyn Tiburcio on November 11, 2016

I was so excited to be a first time voter! I was anxious and happy to be voting for what I thought was going to be, the first female President of the United States.  While I was not in love with Hillary Clinton, I thought that she’d be a great candidate for the United States, being that she has dedicated the majority of her life to politics. My mother has said many good things about the Clinton family and I just grew up listening to that. So of course I voted for her and did my research on the other candidates to know a little bit more.

I watched the news on November 8th. As I kept seeing the color red taking up the nation, I just decided to go to my room and sleep. I had hope that this nightmare would be over.

I woke up in the morning and realized that it was a reality. I couldn’t stop crying. I imagined my mother losing her job due to the policies that he will implement, I imagined my little brother and the other  kids that are going to get bullied in school because of their skin color, and I imagined the billions of people that he offended and what must be going through their minds at that moment.

November 9th was the day that shocked many people not only in America, but also around the world. What many people, including officials, once considered a joke is now in office and in charge of this country.

Why do I call this a nightmare? Because of his hateful comments that just bring fear in my body, along with many other individuals. I know that you’ve probably heard this a thousand times, but it’s true. He has said things that are considered extreme and radical. I can’t imagine living in country where a man represents so much hate.

I am Latina and I cry a little every time I hear what he has to say about Hispanics, specifically Mexicans. It hurts to know that many people agree with what he says. What he does not understand is that Hispanics, along with other immigrants, come here for a better life, especially for their children. No, they are not bringing crime and they are not bringing drugs. They come here with a hope to learn and for a better future. My parents came from the Dominican Republic so they are considered immigrants. They got their citizenship and so did many Hispanics, but it’s not an easy process. It takes A LOT of time and patience and he will never understand those facts.

I am a Feminist and I feel a great pain with all that he has said about women. There’s so much that he has said that is just disgusts me. Women have worked so hard throughout history. Now look at the example that little girls and boys have to look up to.

At first I felt fear and I admit that I still kind of do. This is all very scary and threatening to me and to many people. While I will never call him my president, I will say this:

I WILL fight for the country’s values.

I WILL use my voice and make sure that there is progressive change in this country.

I WILL use my voice as a Latina, a woman, and an American citizen to fight for equality and morality in this country.

We as the people can and WILL unite to fight against this.
