The App for Discounted Fun: Groupon

By Tylar Weber on May 4, 2017

Are you a broke college student, but love going out with friends? Have you heard of Groupon? If not, you should totally check it out. It is an app and a website.

Groupon is a worldwide e-commerce marketplace connecting millions of subscribers with local merchants by offering activities, travel, goods and services in more than 28 countries. Basically, Groupon is a discount platform. You can buy just about anything in the retail field. It also has several options such as “Things to do,” “Food &  drinks,” “Health & fitness,” etc.

It is a great app because you can search for things by location. So if it is a Friday night and you and your friends want to go out to dinner, you can click on the “Near Me” search bar, type in where you are, then click the food and drink tab and see local restaurants giving discounts on their meals.

For example, at a restaurant near me where a meal for two people could normally cost $50, I can buy a voucher on Groupon and pay $27 for two people instead of $50. If you eat over $50, you have to pay the extra, but isn’t that crazy?? Two people can eat $50 worth of food for only $27!

My family and I love to do Room Escapes. However, they tend to be $28 a person, and you need 4 people, minimum, to play. $28 can be a lot of money to pay for an activity when in college. Groupon tends to always have Room Escape deals. Sometimes you can buy 2 tickets for $28. You might have just saved yourself a week’s worth of food by using Groupon, and you still had a great night out with your friends or family.

Are you stressed out from midterms, finals or college in general? Check  Groupon’s “Beauty & Spa” tab for discounts on spa days and massages. Most discounts are at least a third off. A massage that normally would cost $95 could cost only $37 if you use Groupon. That’s awesome, right?!

Groupon also has a “My Stuff” folder. It shows everything you have purchased. However, when buying discounted things from Groupon there are rules. These rules are normally on the bottom of the screen so you can read them before purchasing anything. I know everyone hates reading the rules, but in this instance, it is a good idea. The rules basically tell you what happens if your purchase expires before you use it. You want to be able to use the vouchers and tickets you buy so just read the rules.
