It’s almost moving day and there is still a lot to be done before you move into your new apartment or dorm. There are a lot of moving parts that go into moving, which can cause you to feel overwhelmed. It’s important to remember to stay calm and that everything will be just fine because you have prepped for your move and are ready to go!

Moving isn’t something that you can do spontaneously, it’s something you must plan out and organize. We’ve come up with a prep guide for moving that will ensure you won’t leave anything out and will have a smooth transition.

Set a Date

Just because you can move into your new apartment or dorm when the lease starts does not mean that it is the best time to do so. If it is a Wednesday where people are working all day, then it may be a good idea to move on the weekend. Make sure to clear your schedule for that day and make sure you don’t have any other commitments because you never know how long it will take to move.

Hire Some Help

It would be impossible for one person to move an entire apartment by himself or herself, so it’s important to ask for help. If you can afford to hire a moving company, then go for it! It’ll save you a lot of time and energy to have professionals move heavy furniture into your new home rather than you and some friends. This is especially helpful if you are moving to an upper-level apartment.

If you are trying to save some money, maybe to buy some new furniture or decorations, you can always ask your friends and family. Make sure that they are physically able to help you carry heavy furniture into your new apartment and are available on the day that you have set.

Don’t ask last minute though! Give them at least a week’s notice so they can move around their schedule if needed and secure that day for you.

If you need to rent a moving truck, make sure to schedule this at least a week before you move so you aren’t left without one! This is a huge help, especially with moving large items.

Hit the Gym

It takes a lot of energy and strength to move. If you don’t already fit the gym into your routine, it may be a good time to start. Hitting the gym will give you a boost of energy and can help you with some strength before moving day. Try to start going at least a month before you move so you can make some progress. Lift weights and do a little bit of cardio to get your heart rate up.

This is not only a good way to prepare to move but also a great thing to add to your daily routine!

Purge Your Belongings

There’s a sense of having a new beginning when you move into a new apartment. Go through your belongings and decide which items you would like to keep and which would be better donated or thrown out. Go through all of your clothing, shoes, books, knick-knacks, and decorations. If there is a piece of furniture you hate, feel free to kick it to the curb!

Going through and throwing out some of your belongings will give you less to move and you will feel refreshed!

Decide on Furniture

Depending on how long your lease is for, you may want to look at different options for what kind of furniture you have in your apartment. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on new or used furniture, you may decide to go with furniture rental.

With this option, you won’t have to move the furniture yourself and you won’t have to worry about getting it out of the apartment and into another one when you decide to move again. This saves you not only money but also the pain and energy of moving it.

Organize Your Packing

The worst thing about moving is not knowing where anything is. A great way to overcome this problem is to be organized when you pack. Pack by room and label your boxes. Make sure to keep items that you will still need aside from packing the rest of your things.

Stay Calm

If something goes wrong the day you are moving, just remember to stay calm. It can feel overwhelming to pack everything you own into cardboard boxes only to unpack them again. Start packing early and do it over a few days rather than in one day. Don’t put things off. If you follow this prep guide, then you should have a smooth move into your new home.
