By Tamiera Vandegrift on November 20, 2017

Thanksgiving break is that wonderful refresher resting between a messy, stressful semester and the living hell we all know as finals week. Once November rolls around, we all start the countdown until we can ditch the lecture hall and flock home. Thanksgiving break is an important time for you and your mental health. During this week, you will have time to catch up on rest and escape from the stresses you were facing all throughout the semester. After all, the peak of college begins to rise during October and November. Thanksgiving break is a breath of fresh air right before the finals week craze comes about. So what’s the best way to make the most of your Thanksgiving break?

Follow traditions

We all have our holiday traditions. For most, it’s cooking a giant Thanksgiving feast on Thanksgiving day while watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in the background. After all, Thanksgiving break is the only time you’ll be able to see your favorite cartoon characters floating around New York City larger than life. Watching the parade will give your family and/or friends time to laugh at the corny jokes of the news anchors and debate over whether or not the artists performing are actually singing or lip-syncing. (Believe me – it’s harder to spot than it looks!)

There’s no forgetting the biggest Thanksgiving tradition: the grub! There’s nothing better than enjoying a huge, wholesome meal with the people you love around you. Today, if only today, forget the calorie counter and the carbs. This is your one chance to dig in and enjoy something that isn’t ramen or something out of a frozen microwavable tray. Come on. Live a little. It’s Thanksgiving break.

TRY Black Friday shopping

This is a cautionary part of the list. Black Friday technically begins Thursday night, so it might seem like a fun idea to run out to the shops right after polishing off your dinner plates. Do you. Black Friday is a time for some really excellent deals and offers, so certainly take advantage of them. However, it can also be a pretty dangerous time of year with the large crowds and overly excited shoppers. Don’t let this deter you, though! On Black Friday, you have the chance to bring some cute clothes or awesome video game steals back to campus with you. Just be sure to be safe doing so!

Reconnect with friends

Reconnecting and bonding with family is great. However, we would all be lying if we said that our overly politically incorrect uncle or our baby brother weren’t getting under our skin. Take some time to escape and spend time with your high school friends. Over the course of time, you will have less and less time to spend with them. It’s tragic, but breaks from school could be the last chances you have to spend time with them, at least for some time. Use your spare time to do all of the same shenanigans you did before you went off to your school.

Go see late night movies at your discount theater. Go watch a football game at your old high school, that is if you actually want to see your old high school again. Do corny arts and crafts together with some of your favorite songs or one of your favorite movies in the background. Remember the turkey hats you made in elementary school? Have a Thanksgiving photo shoot. After all, you all wouldn’t DARE go back to school or work without some new Instagram pictures to show off, would you? Use some time during your Thanksgiving break to make lasting memories with your friends, too.

Be lazy…Very lazy

Take three hour naps every day if you need to. Trust me, we won’t judge. College can make your sleep schedule so out of whack in between classes, internships, part-time jobs, philanthropy work, organizations, Greek life… Need I go on? Thanksgiving break is a time for you to catch your breath, so make sure to use it effectively. If you will feel most refreshed after sleeping until noon every day, go for it. If you feel the need to sit in front of your old, handy Play Station 2 for hours on end to remember the glory days of Kingdom Hearts and Sims, go for it. Take time for yourself to enjoy the things you love. By the time you board the plane or hop in the car to go back to school again, you will feel really refreshed and ready to tackle your academics again.

Take time to ENJOY your time

Quiet the little voice in your head that’s reminding you about the final exam waiting around the corner. Don’t you dare open up your laptop to obsess over that half written essay. You have worked your butt off this semester and you deserve a week to breathe and take care of yourself. Take this time to enjoy your time with family, friends, and most of all your time alone. After you graduate, you might not be able to enjoy a week free from most of your responsibilities. Savor this moment now!

Happy Thanksgiving!
